Motivational Interviewing (MI) is used to assess the readiness and motivation to change. It is a client centered approach and empowers individuals to take responsibility for their own actions and choices. MI honors the individual’s autonomy, the notion that chance cannot be forced but is chosen and allowing the individual to make her/his own choices. In addition, it builds rapport, evokes self-awareness and is collaborative. The therapist is a passenger on this journey and supporting the individual to identify their own motivators, strengths, and barriers. The individual is empowered to be in the driver’s seat as well as being held accountable for their choices by giving them the responsibility for their actions without judgment.
