Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and helps individuals understand how thoughts affect emotions and behaviors. “Dialectical” means combining opposite ideas and validating where the individual is at while addressing negative patterns in thinking and behavior. DBT focuses on helping people accept the reality of their lives and their behaviors, as well as helping them learn to change their lives, including their unhelpful behaviors. The main goals of teach people how to live in the moment, develop healthy ways to cope with stress, regulate their emotions, and improve their relationships with others.
